About High View Farm
The house shown in the various photos in these pages was located at 4440 Nichols Avenue, SW, in Washington, DC. James Henry Baden, Sr., bought the house for his family in 1922. At that time it was outside the settled areas of Washington and Nichols Avenue was called Giesboro Road, a country lane. The property was about 40 acres and was located between Giesboro Road (now Martin Luther King Avenue) and South Capitol Street. The house was on a ridge above the Potomac River, near the Naval Research Laboratory and Bolling Air Force Base. It is across the river from Alexandria, Virginia. In those days, most people with enough land raised fruits, vegetables and flowers and kept some farm animals, even in downtown Washington. The Badens had extensive gardens – some would have considered the property a small farm. During the depression they sold canned fruit and preserves bearing the label HIGH VIEW FARM, thus the name of this web site. Those who lived there usually called it “4440.” The house was torn down in 1950, as town houses and apartments were built on the former country lands. The black and white photos found on these pages were taken by James Baden. |
